VERSE 1

I plopped down in my easy chair and turned on TVG.
They're runnin' a Derby in Arkansas for all the world to see,
A bunch of colts, all nondescript, the hardboots say, "Won't do!"
When an unknown Pensylvania colt wires th' field as he drives through.

And then they shoved 'em in th' gate
(And then) the flag went up
(And then) the starter sent 'em away
(And then, and then...)

AEH, AEH!

And then along came Jones
Strong, wiry Jones
Smooth movin' Jones
(Fast dashin' Jones)
Along came handsome Smarty Jones

VERSE 2

"Five million bucks", Charles Cella says, "if he wins just one more race!"
But th' experts scoffed, "All he can do is set an honest pace."
"When you hit that stretch at Louisville, you got to have th' breedin.
They said ..., "Ten furlongs in his pedigree is what this colt is needin'."

And then they led 'em over
(And then) played My Old Kentucky Home
(And then) out into th' roarin' crowd
(And then, and then...)

AEH, AEH!

And then along came Jones
Strong, wiry Jones
Smooth movin' Jones
(Fast dashin' Jones)
Along came handsome Smarty Jones

VERSE 3

"It's all a fluke", th' Bluebloods said, "th' track was naught but slop,
if this colt'd been collared, why he was bound to stop."
"Th' Kentucky colts, why they wuz trapped, in all that traffic jam."
They said ...," Wait'll you get to Baltimore, your colt will soon be Spam!"

And then they went to Maryland
(And then) to Pimlico
(And then) they ran in some fresh colts
(And then, and then...)

AEH, AEH!

And then along came Jones
Strong, wiry Jones
Smooth movin' Jones
(Fast dashin' Jones)
Along came handsome Smarty Jones

VERSE 4

So now it's on to New York town, a town that knows no pity,
'N though this colt is country bred, he ain't flustered in th' city.
"So bring 'em on", Roy Chapman crys, "'n bring th' best ya' got."
He said ..., "When they hit that stretch at Belmont, Smarty'll tie 'em in a knot."

And then he'll see big Tapit
(And then) he'll hear Sinatra's song
(And then) they'll run th' farthest, that they have ever gone
(And then, and then...)

AEH, AEH!

And then along comes Jones
Strong, wiry Jones
Smooth movin' Jones
(Fast dashin' Jones)

Along comes handsome Smarty Jones
